Underworld Nymph

Minthe, a nymph in Greek mythology, was a lover of Hades, the god of the underworld. When Persephone, goddess of spring and queen of the underworld, discovered the affair, she turned Minthe into a small plant out of jealousy. Hades, in memory of Minthe, gave her the distinctive and refreshing aroma of mint.

Full Description

Minthe, in Greek mythology, is a nymph associated with the river Cocytus in the underworld. She is often depicted as a beautiful yet haughty figure. Minthe’s story is chiefly tied to Hades, the god of the underworld.

According to mythology, Minthe was once a lover of Hades. When Persephone, Hades' wife and the goddess of spring and Queen of the underworld, discovered the affair or felt threatened by Minthe's beauty, she confronted her. In some versions of the myth, Persephone transforms Minthe into a mint plant in a fit of jealousy, while in others, it is Demeter, Persephone’s mother and the goddess of the harvest, who enacts the transformation to protect her daughter's marriage. Hades, in memory of Minthe, gave her the distinctive and refreshing aroma, immortalized her in a way that symbolizes her former beauty and allure, and to keep himself a cleared-mind. It is worthwhile to note that Hades had not had any other affair since, making him one of the most loyal and loving husband among the Olympians.
