Its deep roots and quiet sway hold profound strength, and its remarkable flexibility lets it bend violently in the wind without ever breaking. Within, it is hollow. The Chinese call this 虛心, an "empty heart", and it is a compliment: the humility of a mind with room left in it. Bamboo does not argue with the weather. It listens, moves, and stands again.

The Throat Chakra · Vishuddha: The fifth of the seven chakras in the yogic and Tantric traditions of India, seated at the throat and associated with the element of space (ether) and the colour blue. It holds the questions of voice: Can I say what is true? Can I listen as well as I speak? Bamboo is the chakra's natural emblem. Hollow, segmented and resonant, it becomes the flute (笛) and the xiao (簫), instruments that make music only when breath passes through an empty centre. Song-dynasty scholars gathered it with the pine and the plum as the Three Friends of Winter (歲寒三友), and the poet Su Shi declared that he would rather eat without meat than live without bamboo (寧可食無肉，不可居無竹), for a lack of meat makes a man thin, but a lack of bamboo makes him vulgar. Its jointed stem gave the language its word for integrity, 節, the same character used for a person's principles and for the turning points of the year. And in 1945 a bamboo shoot pushed up through the scorched ground of Hiroshima, among the first green things to return, singing its quiet ode to beginning again.
