Each spritz envelopes hair and skin in a dewy, full-petalled rose accord, green at the stem and warm with clove, sandalwood and vetiver at the root, that smooths dry lengths while opening a quiet, generous space in the chest.

As Tagore wrote, the rose carries the whole of human imagination about love, beauty, pain and transcendence. It is the flower of Cleopatra's sails and the medieval cloister, of the Sufi's longing and the lover's apology. It walks the line between divine purity and earthly desire, and it has never once chosen between them.

The Heart Chakra · Anahata: The fourth and central chakra in the yogic and Tantric traditions of India, seated at the centre of the chest and associated with the element air and the colour green, the green of leaves around a flower. Its name means "unstruck", a sound made without two things colliding. It holds the questions of connection: Can I give without keeping count? Can I receive? The rose is its universal flower, and rose otto its oldest medicine for grief. Wear it when the heart feels closed, or when it feels too open to bear.

The scent: This Bulgarian rose accord is built the way a perfumer builds a rose: the honeyed, petal-soft heart of the flower, lifted by rose geranium and a drop of true Bulgarian rose otto, a green snap of leaf at the opening, the faint spice of clove and a dewy, metallic glint of rose oxide, then the garden floor of vetiver, sandalwood, guaiacwood and spikenard where the roots keep their secrets.

The Rosa Damascena Hydrolate: The flower's own water, gathered when Damask roses are distilled in the Valley of Roses. Faintly sweet and softly astringent, it balances pH, calms redness and heat, refreshes a tired scalp and leaves hair and skin feeling cool, dewy and comforted.

The Oil Veil: A special blend of jojoba, argan, camellia, sweet almond oils and vitamin E as a skin nurturing carrier.

The Story: Between the Balkan and Sredna Gora mountains lies a long, sheltered valley around the town of Kazanlak where the Damask rose has been grown since the Ottoman centuries, and where a sandy soil, a cool May and a morning mist conspire to make the finest rose oil on earth. The flowers are picked by hand between dawn and mid-morning, before the sun can steal their scent, and it takes roughly three to four thousand kilograms of petals to yield a single kilogram of otto. Every June the valley crowns a Rose Queen and sings while it harvests. The art itself is far older: the Persian physician Ibn Sina perfected the distillation of rose water a thousand years ago and proclaimed that "the scent of perfume is good for the soul". From Persia the rose travelled west, and the Persian word for a walled garden, pairidaeza, became our paradise. In medieval cloisters a rose hung over the table meant sub rosa, under the rose: what is said here stays in the heart.

How to Experience Your Bulgarian Rose Opening Ritual:

• The Heart Reset: Mist once over the chest and once over the hair. Place a hand flat on the sternum, breathe in to a count of four and out to a count of six, and let the ribs widen under your palm. Three breaths, or as many as the day needs.
